Copperas Mine


Although the Copperas Mine was not actually worked for iron ore, it is treated here because of its magnetite bearing deposit and historical significance. The mine was worked for the purpose of making red paint during the War of 1812 and is also said to have been worked during the Revolutionary War. The magnetite present was mixed with pyrite.

Today the mine consists of short adits driven into the hillside, shafts and open cut workings. The tailing dumps are large. Some of the openings have been filled over the recent years. Little else is known about this operation.
