Dolan Mine

The Dolan Mine, named for Bishop Dolan, was opened in 1869 by a shaft put down 120 feet. It passed through three minor shoots of ore but the mine closed sometime after. When the mine reopened in 1883, another shaft was sunk reaching a depth of 140 feet. Afterward an adit was driven to intersect the vein but no mining was accomplished from it. In 1884, approximately 1,000 tons of magnetite ore were mined. A slope was sunk to a depth of 170 feet whereby drifting was done. By 1886 the mine had closed for good.

A total of two veins were tapped which are 42 feet apart and 6 to 7 feet wide. It is speculated that a total of around 5,000 tons of ore was produced. The ore was shipped to the Wharton furnaces at Port Oram and Hackettstown.
