Franklinite or Stirling Hill Mine

The Franklinite Mine was in fact the only commercial mine where the mineral franklinite was an important ore of iron. The mine was opened in 1877 and worked for five years until increasing amounts of zinc were found. Charles Trotter who leased the land, excavated a tunnel 317 feet in length to reach an open pit where the ore was mined. A total of 45,000 tons of iron ore were extracted during the first two years of operation alone.

The deposit consisted of a massive body of franklinite that was as wide as 100 feet in some areas but irregular in width. The tunnel was merely a haulageway where the ore was transported from the open pit.
