The Franklinite Mine was operated as an iron mine but at other times the open pit was worked for zinc. From 1860 to 1870, Mr. Noble mined this pit as the Noble Mine for hemimorphite, a zinc silicate. In the 20th century, the mine tunnel continued as a haulageway and a powder magazine was built inside.

Pictured to the left is the historic open pit at the other end of the "Trotter Tunnel".
