Hoit Mine

The Hoit Mine was opened around 1870 by a 30° slope following the dip of the vein southeast. The magnetite ore is compact and contains a beautiful red garnet within the country rock. The slope became steeper with depth under the current water table. An adit was driven a total distance of 144 feet into the hill at the level of the uppermost workings and a drift driven southwest along the strike for a distance of 70 feet.

It is believed the mine ceased operations around 1875. The orebody has not been sufficiently mined as research was conducted in 1945 by the government to determine the viability of reopening the mine.
