The inclined shaft to the Lake Mine in 2008. |
Lake Mine
The Lake Mine was a very important operation although it is not known when
it was first worked. The mine reached a depth of 130 feet by 1888 and was
only 75 feet distant from the nearest level of the Sterling Mine. The mine
was in continuous operation from 1896 through 1917. The Ramapo Ore Company
leased the mine in 1918 and worked the mine until it was finally abandoned
in 1921.
The ore body was an impressive 500 feet in width by 10 feet in height dipping
16 degrees slightly east of north near the main entrance. This entrance
consists of an inclined shaft approximately 3,800 feet in length, varying
from 12 to 25 degrees along the strike with drifting accomplished from both
sides of the tunnel.
