Old Mine

The Old Mine is the largest of a series of historic
emery mines in Massachussetts known collectively
as the Chester Emery Mines. First worked for iron,
the Old Mine was mined predominantly in the
19th century as a source of emery. Emery, being
a mixture of corundum, magnetite, hematite and
other minerals, was used for abrasives.

The Old Mine is currently entered through an upper
adit as the main is now longer accessible. The mine
consists of a series of stopes, shafts and inter-
connected levels spanning approximately 1/2 mile
underground.
