The southern adit to the Oneida Mine in 2007. |
Oneida Mine
The history and operation of the Oneida Mine is as of yet shrouded in mystery,
especially for a mine of its size. The mine was discovered by Christopher
Martin and worked a vein of cinnabar to some extent. Three tunnels were
driven southwest but apparently only minor attempts were done to extract
ore from them.
While other workings exist, only two tunnels were accessible and examined.
The southern most tunnel was driven nearly 1500 feet into the hillside.
The northern tunnel, parallel to the first was not nearly as long penetrating
approximately 150 feet into the hillside.
