Beginning in 1967 and ending in 1974, toxic and environmentally dangerous waste products were allowed to be dumped into the main shaft and surrounding area including paint sludges which contaminated the water supply. Remediation projects were later ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2004, area residents and mine researchers here confirmed that toxic waste still existed on site. The site is again being cleaned up.
