Sun Ray Tunnel

As early as 1723, a tunnel was reported to exist in the area according to a deed. The tunnel was driven into the hillside likely for the purpose of tapping a mineral vein but apparently no ore was ever extracted nor found. The tunnel having been re-”discovered” in 1905 evidently contained nearly 100% pure water flowing from a natural spring at its end. Seeing commercial potential, the Sun Ray Spring Water Company was born and in 1907, began constructing a bottling plant in the vicinity to sell what became known at the time as “the purest water in the world.”

Sun Ray Water also produced a line of sodas but eventually was shut down by the government after furnishing it with bootleg sugar. No further attempts were made for mineral exploitation.
