Adit Tunnel No. 3 of the Sunk Mine in 2006. |
Sunk Mine
The Sunk or Stewart Mine was opened around 1800 on lands owned by Col. Alexander Stewart. The mine was the most extensively worked along the Philips belt. Being 7 miles in length, it was possibly the most continuous belt in the Highlands east of the Hudson River. Its name is attributed to a large tract of low lying ground presenting a sunken appearance.
By 1849 the mine was not yet at a depth to necessitate adit drainage. By the 1860's, the Sunk Mine was still the most important mine along the belt and five mines were in operation on Sunken Mine Mountain. In 1880 the mine was owned by Reading Iron Company but had been abandoned for several years. The mine was dewatered this year but because of financial difficulties, no actual mining took place.
