The prospect adit in 2008. |
Washington Prospect
A distance west of the Washington Mine lies a 19th century adit tunnel driven to crosscut a thin deposit. Presumably this tunnel was driven in conjunction with the larger operation. It is evident that this is nothing more than a prospect made by horizontal intersection with the vein which was unworthwhile to mine.
The Washington Mine was first operated in 1863 and it was probably around the same time that efforts were made here. When the Erie Railroad re-routed its mainline in the early 1900's, the right of way passed within 30 feet of the entrance. Subsequently, the adit stands visible today to train passengers passing through the Shawangunks.
