Yyyyyyyyyeeeeeeahhhhh!
I think this thing will be sweet! Shouldn't be hard...... and it'll be really fun to mess around with.

WE SHOULD HAVE A BUILD OFF! Each one of us buy a junk lawnmower and see who can make the best narrow gauge rail motor out of it! HA!

for ease of laying rail and size it should be inside wheel, 24 inch gauge.

it would look better and the motor could be wider, allowing for a better cg. then you wont tip it over as you try to see how fast you can get it going before you hit a turn and tip it over. cause i know the brakes will indeed fail if you build it!

you could probably just pick it up and put it back on the track  you think you got some extra cash to build this thing? remember we still have to do your airplane annual insp.

O.K. guys to save a bunch of money, headaches & engineering here is the idea. Make sure you find an old hydrostatic lawn mower. This solves fwd, rev, & yes stopping! We are designing a 2-1/2: scale steam engine but we are doing the worst thing ever & put a diesel engine in it. We need to have this project completed by the beginning of summer to solve another crises in the fall. We just bought the diesel engine & the hydrostatic system & now it is go time for machining / fabrication. We are going with a steam logging locomotive design. This is going to take forever to build so stay with the simple idea. You will beat us but ours is a very small gauge & not very practical. The project for our locomotive will have to haul estimated 3,000-4,000 people in two days though.

Have to agree with the Hydrostatic drive tractor. I had an old Simplicity that was hydrostatic with one lever and you went forward, stop and reverse. They are around i am sure you guys have contacts with scrap yards to get one. The best thing about them they are easy to work on.
