thats why we gotta hide them under it soon! eric did a nice job welding them together didnt he. he had a good idea to drill 9 holes in the spacer tube and weld it to the solid axle so its not relying on the butt end welds only for strength. you can see them through the paint in some of the pics.

theres acutally going to be alot of new parts on this mine car. thats why its a construction and not a restoration. we are not copying any real old coal company mine car, we are designing our own. taking a few of the features (and parts) we like from hudson cars, wanamie cars, carbondale coal co. cars, pennsylvania coal co. cars and a bit of chucker engineering! the axles are new, the steel for the bottom will be new, the steel supports for the side will be new, the end brackets will be new, the steel around the top of the car will be new and some dump door parts will be new.

so the wheels just slide onto the axle ends? what keeps them from turning on the axle when the car is rolling?

and yeah that thing is gonna roll---better not let miner mike be the spragger---my bitty car will be toast!!

yea i think we had a message about miner mike spragging back in the beginning of this thread and that led to the mine car running over ct mikes mule! anyways, the wheels are just slid on the axles like you mentioned. nothing keeps them from rolling on the axle but friction. its easier for the axle to turn in the bearing. however there is a reason for this. when you go around a tight curve like you would encounter in an anthracite mine, the outside wheel must travel faster than the inside or it will slide causing ealry wheel wear and haulage friction. by having the wheels loose, they can turn if they have to but normally they just turn with the axle. the flat car is the same way but its on plain brass blocks. i wondered if the wheels would turn but in looking under the car while its going down the track the axle spins with the wheels.

Thats why the #190 slope has a problem with the axel breaking coming around the curve on the slope. the wheels are solid on the axels and are forced to travel at the same speed, even though the outside wheel need to travel faster. Is essence it slides a bit on the rails....and thats why they grease it like mad every morning. It puts such a stress on the axel that the whole thing snaps about once a year.

just got word today that the wood is cut for the coal car. we are picking it up on monday and i guess mine car mondays are going to be spooled up again. this ones gonna come together fast guys, we only have a few pieces of steel to get yet, frame it up and its done. the bottom framework of the car is going to be exactly the same as the flat car which we completed last year so this one should go together like cake!
