I am happy to introduce our newest member to the Iron Miners family, our daughter Sage! Today she visited her first mine, the O'Traveller Mine, easily accessible from a quiet one way road in Rockland County, New York.

Sheesh, I thought for a moment there, you're standing outside of a crypt.. Now you have to tell us more about that place.

Well, I guess exploring abandoned mines is a calling that demands lots of experience. That being the case, there's nothing quite like starting 'em out young!

By the way, I lived in Rockland County, NY for about 5 years back in the 1980's. Where is this exactly?

I used to go hiking in the Bear Mountain and Harriman State parks. I did, actually, find a couple of very old, small mines up there what westerners would probably just call "prospects".

Regards,
Fred M. cain

Unfortunately there is very sparse information about the mine. Because it predates even the Revolutionary War, it is likely that no proper record of the operation has survived. Revolutionary War soldiers had written about it but I'm unsure whether it was active then. The mine has since become a fixture of the town of Piermont, located on S. Piermont Ave, and for many years was used for spring water. The 5' x 6' tunnel heads north to a 10 foot square room, possibly a stope, before making a 90 degree turn west for a total distance of 100 feet.

That's right Chris! This was just my way of cleverly announcing the new baby while adhering strictly to the topic of hard rock mining. After all, there's no section on here called Miner Mike's Baby Photos. You'll be able to learn all you want about the little one in her upcoming official mine researcher bio. ;)
