Many may not realize a significant portion of the Hibernia Mine Railroad, the railroad that once hauled ore from the prosperous Hibernia and Beach Glen mines still exists today along its original right-of-way. The Hibernia Mine Railroad incorporated on March 18, 1863, was financed by various owners of the Hibernia Mine and originally terminated at its south end at the Morris Canal. By 1868 it was later extended further south to reach the Morris and Essex Railroad, now the NJ Transit Morristown Line. After the Hibernia Mine was abandoned in 1916, the last passenger train arrived at Hibernia around 1928. After shipments from Beach Glen ceased in 1942, most of the railroad was abandoned and the tracks removed in 1947. However, the remaining portion of track in Rockaway Borough was preserved and in 1956 re-routed northward to serve new industrial plants along present day Green Pond Road. Here is a tour of the original right of way beginning at the Mill Lane Tavern following its route until it reaches the Interstate 80 underpass where it diverges from its original footprint (visible just after the road crossing seen at 4:25). The remaining portion is now known as the Dover & Rockaway Railroad and is operated by the Morristown & Erie Railway.
