I think what we probably should do, for our own knowledge, is to do a study on drainage of the Northern Field. What we need to figure out is how many mine pools are there. By my definition, a mine pool is an isolated pool of water in the mine which which is closed off by veins of coal, barrier pillars, or any other means. Two or more veins of coal which have a rock tunnel under the level of the mine pool connecting them to each other would qualify as a single mine pool. The tunnel between the veins of coal would keep the level of water in both veins at the same height.

What we would need to do is chart on a map the locations of the various outfalls. PA Tunnel doesn't drain anymore, but we can plot it. Then we would plot Old Forge, Butler Tunnel, Duryea Outfall, and any other northern field points of drainage. Once that is on a map, if we had the locations of the outcrops of the coal veins, we should be able to tell at the vary least what veins of coal any bore hold is in. We could also use that to help determine what veins of coal are being drained.

Anyone got GPS coordinates for any of this stuff? This could be a helpful project..

Greg

Is the butler tunnel just a little hole now like the dana tunnel is? or is it wide open?

the buttler tunnel is wide open. i forget the flow rate but there was alot of water coming out when we were there. it has some sort of screen or grate on it, but was pretty grown in. did you ever hear the story of the chemicals dumped in there?

What the heck was the name of the proposed drainage tunnel from the top of the northern field, through the middle and southern fields, and all the way to the Chesapeake bay? I know it was a native American name that started with an M... It would have been an extraordinary project draining all three anthracite fields. it was a humongous tunnel with vertical inspection shafts every couple miles along its route to the ocean.

Are you doing your project on AMD or is that just a part of it?
