One thing to remember is even if your from the anthracite country somebody with a good ear could always tell what part your from as the dialect changes. Some words take on a different meaning an example being if your in the tower city ( pronounced tarr city locally ) area what the rest of the world calls lunch time is dinner, and what everybody else knows as dinner is supper. In the wyoming valley everybody knows what an onion church is, say it in scranton and they have know clue. In scranton "going for a order" means going grocery shopping, say that in pottsville they'll ask you for what. For further explanation you can go to www.coalregion.com and they have a good dictionary there.

That's funny that he's using it in that way this far up the line, usually that's said that way south of the mountain :D . Another good one is sumer side and winter side. In any valley usually one mountain holds the snow longer than the other, that side of the valley, especially the mountain, is the winter side, the other side is the summer side.

Indeed it is. ;)

Another one of my pet peeves, since you brought up way South of the mountain...
is how people that aren't from around here pronounce "Lancaster."
Hint: It's NOT pronounced like the actor.

~S <---- knows what "the milk's all" means.

When I was working up North in PA for a long time they always said Dinner for lunch. I've since adapted it into my daily speaking. I like it.

Schuylkill and Nanticoke are always "mispronounced" too.

Hey Yo! Youse all tawk funny!

Sorry to bump this thread up, but I'm trying to get my bearings and this one caught my eye.

It's interesting how we all can live in one state and have so many different dialects. I never really thought about it before.

I thought that the dinner/supper, lunch/dinner thing was a southern states thing. Guess I was wrong.

I went to Clearfield, PA with a friend of mine once and up there they wanted to sack my pop. If I hadn't been warned ahead of time, I might have thought that the cashier was making threatening comments about a family member.

No, if we were talking England it would be more like, "Excuse me mum, would you like me to sack your tea? Pip, pip Cheerio!"

See? Totally different.

Unless of course there is an England, PA hiding somewhere. Lord knows there are lots of interesting little towns out there that I don't know about.

I went through Paradise once... it smelled like cow poo!
