In late October 2007, some of the members of the Underground Miners Team have gone ahead and created Abandoned Mine Research, Inc. a Non-Profit group. It is their goal to use this group to secure funding for restoration of old mine equipment and for research, documentation and historic preservation of abandoned anthracite mining sites. Just as the Underground Miners have done thus far, AMR will take all efforts to restore all the equipment they acquire to running order just like it was years ago. It will not sit behind glass in a museum, it will be meant to be seen and touched, teaching new generations the the way things once were and the technology of long ago. The team is very excited taking the next step towards saving old mining sites like the Underground Miners did in Archbald at the Gravity Slope Colliery Buildings, and also to continue restoring historic pieces of mining equipment like they have been doing for the past 5 years.
This project has only just begun and is in its infancy. As time goes on, we will have much more to report on as AMR grows into North East PA's only organization for equipment restoration and anthracite historic preservation.
