Thanks again DEP! You're really making the area lovely!

I could never quite understand how abandoned buildings were destroying the environment. Why is DEP in charge of destroying historic landmarks? Is any structure related to a mine posing a huge health hazard? What will be done with this land other than having an empty field filled with shards of building remains and weeds hospitable to ticks?

What a big shame. Destroying historic structures is definitely not a way to restore the environment. I understand cleaning the land from striping pits, but not to destroy important history..

Same thing goes on down here with the Gettysburg Battlefield. I think they finally figured out a way to make everyone happy with that though.
The Historians over there have a much bigger pull in what to say.

I would hate to know what they have already destroyed at Gettysburg. Was the DEP responsible? Do you mind if I ask you what has been obliterated there?

They have more pull down there because people love war...and people love the history of war.

As in land? I have no idea. They really are diligent in trying to preserve any hallowed ground. The problem with that is that the entire town is pretty much hallowed ground.

There was a struggle with contractors over where/how to build the new visitors center and cyclorama. The dilemma was solved to both parties' satisfaction AFAIK.

The Friends of National Parks at Gettysburg and the NPS keep a close eye on the Feds there.
The Dept. of the Interior oversees the NPS. The NPS doesn't take any crap.
John Latcher runs the NPS at Gettysburg, and he's one tough cookie.

When I worked in preservation at the Eisenhower Farm, I do know they had a struggle with the Dept. of the Interior over housing all the artifacts and collections.
I'm REALLY glad to see the new facility being built, because there are definitely one of a kind artifacts over there going to ruin due to humidity issues.
