I'll be checking for more soon, it has been years since I looked at these photos some of the locations are giving me a real challenge to recall .
I was around 11 yrs old and I'm surprised how foreign some of these look to me now .

Coal Stoves, those are some excellent photos! I luv shooting photos and collecting old photos of the Shamokin area, its so great to see that more photos have survived the history that is being thrown out in our area. Keep posting!! Its also weird to see my photos taken less then a month ago and then photos taken over 40 years ago of the same location. Sad...

Btw, added a few more photos of the Glen Burn. They can be found here -->

hey, is that recent  are you sure that steam is from the mine fire, can you smell it? if a mine is outcasting now they do steam from the temp change. we should take the air monitor there to see whats coming out.

Yes, the Vulcan is still there. I would love to try and save some of this stuff, there are still a few things that can be salvaged...The vein of coal photo was taken one week ago. Come to think about it, I didn't smell anything, so it probably wasn't the mine fire. Then again, who knows...

Hello, I know its been a very long time since I been on here. I lost some interest in photographing mining remnants when a man trip restoration project fell through and two jobs and odd hours at The News-Item staring wearing me down.

Anyhow, renewed interest has me wondering if anyone knows when the fan house along Route 61 at the Glen Burn Colliery was removed.

I am looking for information, and even a photo, if possible. The News-Item might have a negative, but it would take me a long time to find it unless I know a date.

Thanks in advance!!

D.

Speaking of, here is some exact dates of the end of the colliery.

"...The majority of the Glen Burn Colliery was demolished in 1986. Demolition began in July of that year after then Sen. Edward Helfrick, co-owner of Kerris and Helfrick Inc., owners, said DEP wanted the breaker dismantled. The breaker had been closed since midnight, May 31, 1984, when 120 members of the United Mine Workers went on strike. By Feb. 5, 1987, only the conveyor of the main part of the breaker remained. The side buildings and offices, including the an electrical building and twp boilers were spared.

In the spring of 2006, PennDOT removed the electrical building, the main office and a section of the washhouse to accommodate construction of a new Cameron Bridge."

what are those white things in the foreground of the picture from inside the mine? I also agree that it would be sweet to use a skycrane! What is "Yellow Boy Muck"?

Mud in a pool of mine drainage. Has a high acid / iron content, resulting in a distinct yellow orange color. AKA Yellow Dog.
