Okay, I've been reading up (yeah, ain't y'all proud?) and I have a question. Please forgive me if it is of the stupid question variety... remember, I'm a city girl here.

Here goes...

I was reading up the history of the Number 9 and the Pioneer mines and they both mention this "Mammoth Vein." My question is, is this mammoth vein connected to Centralia and if so, is it in danger of being swallowed up by the fire?

Just curious and I'm sure the answers will open up more questions.

hey, well no thats not a stupid question and we get it asked alot on the pioneer tour as, not surprisingly they are only 2 miles from the fire. however fear not as the vein of coal pitches down from pioneer goes under water from the mine pool then pitches back up the other side of the mountain across town. on the other side of this mountain is where the fire is burning. there millions and millions of gallons of water protecting pioneer. no.9 is in a different coal field and poses no threat.
