so today we got the privilege to travel down to the pump room. the foreman at the coal co. we are working at is also the foreman on this job so he invited us along. this was a great experience and we got to enter some large colliery workings. the mine was actually standard gauge track! i hear the idea with this was so they could work on the mine motors and cars at the rr shops and just pull them down the tracks. the pump room is pretty cool. one of the original colliery pumps is still in place and operational. they use it as a back up pump to their primary. they have 2 other escapeways. one is a pod like lackawanna, the other is a mile away at the fan. i guess its a real pain to travel it underground with the yellow boy. the pod we had lowered several times with supplies. this was a cool experience, they inspect it every month so we plan on going back with him next time.

oh and by the way, these pumps lift water for the breaker to use in processing coal. its not to maintain a mine pool, thats established by the jeddo drainage tunnels. the pumps send the water through the original wood lined steel colliery pump line to the surface where it sits in a retaining pond to be pumped by the breaker on demand.

Awesome pics. Thats interesting that the wood lined pipe is still intact after all those years.

Pretty neat. So are these pumps above the water level of the mine pool and they divert water here for pumping up to the breaker?

correct. the mine pool is maintained by the jeddo tunnels. in the 70s the supeys who now run lackawanna mine tour went in there and built dams to hold back water and flood one portion of a gangway to use as a sump. the dams direct some surface water to this sump and then the water is pumped from here to the surface. the colliery pumps were installed in the 40s and water was maintained in the sump by other means but now they need the dams to hold back some of the water.
