Hey all,

Would anyone be up for a day trip to Centralia? Let me know and we can plan from there.

Chris

I'd love to, but I think all these guys work all day on Fridays.
The 30th would work better for me if anyone cares.
I'd like to see how Centralia changed since I've been there last time.

if youve seen it once, thats enough. there is nothing really spectacular there to see. its fame is blown way out of proportion. theres a burned section of ground, a closed road with a crack in it and a few houses left, thats it. you definitely wont make a day trip out of it, hit some other sites. if you plan on spending a day in centralia you will for sure get bored after an hour or 2. if you want to see something impressive go see the olyphant or carbondale mine fire site. at least there, there is a couple hundred foot trench and in some places you can see the burning vein of coal.

I live 10 min away from Centralia & drive through it several times per week.
There is nothing exciting to see there.

It's interesting from a historical perspective, if you've read Unseen Danger or that other book that came out last year. Take a look at the maps and kind of get an idea of place as you wander around. But there really isn't much left to see. There haven't been any reported surface burns since the 1980s, as far as I know. I am curious if anyone knows where the fire fronts currently lie, not that there's anything to see.

I'm sure if there's a new surface burn or major subsidence it will be in the news. That said, it's also attracted enough attention that there are annoying numbers of tourists in the area on weekends.

What's the access to the Olyphant and Carbondale fires like? I'd be interested in seeing the sites though I'd probably prefer to go with someone who knows the safe(ish) areas.
