Hello guys,

Question about retail coal..

I am working on an HO layout and my main focal will be a retail yard. When they used to get coal in by rail, what where the common methods in terms of sizing? Did they get one car of one size etc.

Anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance..

Usually it was only one size per car with the exception of "range" coal. Range was a mix of nut and pea. That wasn't usually shipped mixed though, most of the time they mixed that right at the yard.

Your going to have to grind it up nicely to make it sized correctly for an HO layout. Would be very neat though. We'd love to see pictures of your progress and results of this layout.

Those are some great looking loads. Nice job with that! I've seen a lot of people used the bagged stuff, but that's sweet! Kinda satisfying doing something like that yourself using the real thing.

How did you end up grinding it up?
