Coal Township has had three close calls in the last year with coal refuse fires. The first fire to occur started two years ago at the Excelsior culm banks. After nearly 600,000 tons of coal were removed the fire was extinguished.

Last Feburary an illegal dump near Coal Run caught fire but was quickly put out by Susquehanna Coal and local firefighters. More recently another illegal dump near Gowen City burned for nearly two weeks. Local fire departments dumped thousands of gallons of water and also ultilized foam to extinguish this fire.

Coal refuse fires are happening to frequently in this area and more precautions should be taken to prevent another Centralia.

Yes, although the Glen Burn fire has been less visable in recent years. There's also a section near Coal Run that continues to burn, however, this part of the fire is a mine fire and not a culm refuse fire.

The fire is actually quite complex. OSHA has it listed as two underground and two coal refuse fires, but its consided one fire. The exact cause and date are unknown.

Larry, do you know where the Coal Run part of the fire is exactly?
