I'm an old fart who likes folk and acoustic music. While browsing around this evening I ran across this listing:

http://www.rounder.com/index.php?id=album.php&musicalGroupId=4708&catalog_id=5104

These were field recording done in the late 40's to document songs. It is not a fine production but may be interest to the UGM guys.

You're probably not as old as me.
:)
That's a great album. Kathy Mattea had a great new mining song album out recently too.

I downloaded the Kathy Mattea Album but nothing on it excited me.

It seems a bit dark or sultry.

I prefer the Merle Travis version of Dark as Dungeon. And there is another version of Coal Tattoo that I like better too.

Banks,

Those are just plain depressing. There's more cheer at an Undertaker's Convention.

We're just hopeless romantics, I guess. You know, all that tragedy and History and stuff.

Roger That!!

I personally like tragic ballads ( that's where the hero dies), they just need a healthy dose of banjo, acoustic guitar, or some hot fiddle.

Pick one!

Perhaps you'd all enjoy my friend Donal's stuff. He does primarily traditional Irish music, has a lot of sad stuff, but plays pubs almost nightly so he has a huge arsenal of upbeat music as well.

In the heart-tugging department, see if you can get a sound bite from his section on lyrics under "where's your Johnny O". It's a story of Donal's family keeping the truth about his father away from him until he seeks him out on his own, and finds he is in a state hospital. When he goes to finally meet him, he is told he died just the day before. True story, gets me every time he sings it.

Great stuff on the site, BTW.

some of it is, no late 90s to early 00 stuff...... have you heard anything off the new one yet? its fast and alot harder than anything since the black album. sounds alot like justice.
