Coal plant expected to create local jobs

BY DUSTIN PANGONIS
POTTSVILLE REPUBLICAN & HERALD
November 7, 2008

A proposed $400 million coal gasification project in Good Spring will create about 100 jobs and construction is expected to begin in 2010, project officials said Thursday.

The plant, which received a $5 million investment to cover development costs, will turn coal into gas to power turbines and generate electricity.

Future Power Pa. LLC, a subsidiary of Houston-based clean coal energy developer Future Fuels LLC., and Quad 3, which share office space in Moosic, are planning for the plant to be operational by 2011.

Jim Palumbo, the president of the technical consultant company Quad 3, said the plant will also create indirect jobs in the area and Future Fuels partner Nick Cohen said a few hundred temporary construction jobs will be created.

Canadian-based Immersive Media Corp. has made an investment for the initial costs to develop plans and secure permits for the plant. Palumbo said the company is confident that once permits and plans have been secured to construct the plant, the construction will be funded by private investors.

“The hardest thing to do is develop a project and get the development financing, because that’s where all the risk is,â€

Something has been rumored to be going on with Summit Anthracite for a while. The only thing that has me concerned is that there are breakers that aren't running because they can't get raw coal. If MSHA changed there enforcement policys around and had laws that actually were tailored to the Anthracite there would be plenty of coal but I don't see that happening with the current District Manager. I don't see people wanting to invest in a plant like this if they can't get the raw coal.

Coal Gasification is an interesting technology. There is a new ground-up plant just starting dirt work a few miles up the road from me.

But the technology doesn't make a lot of sense to burn anthracite. It's big claim to fame is the sulfur is much easier to contain that common boiler/steam technology.

If sulfur is out of the equation, there is easier coal to mine.

I'm NOT going to make this an Anty vs Bity war.

But what part of my statement do you not agree with?

There's no need to roll over and play dead. It's all in good fun.

And I should not come off as an expert in the matter. I'm not.

I don't know what the mining cost per ton are for Anthracite. But. I suspect that it is higher that shallow-surface mined Bity. And the reserves of Bit. are higher.

Both minerals have their places. Anth. might well-be $100 a bottle Burgundy while Bit. is $2 Rot - Gut.

There is no need to waste the good stuff on the drunk on the corner.

Electrical Generation is the drunk. Trains of 6000 to 10,000 net tons are common, everyday events.

Beside there was a lot of shallow coal mined here in the late 70's with road construction equipment. That market died with Air Quality standards made it too expensive to burn.

Come on Mike A. lets go another round Bitty vs. Anty coal. Got that text video you sent over the weekend.

They put that plant in & burn Bitty coal God that would be cool. I can see the coal train loads now.

After checking some figures. I should have toned down the rethoric a bit.

The burn rate of a traditional coal-fired plant is on the order of 10 tons per mega watt per day. Based on those figure this plant will use no more than 1500 tons a day. ( FYI, a Megawatt is 10,000 - 100 watt light bulbs burning)

I understand that is a large figure for an independent Anty mine. Maybe a respectable figure for the larger mines working with CM's in flat pitch.

Doug I am pretty sure they only have one Anty mine left using Continuous Miners so it looks like the Bitty coal will be shipped in

Mike A.'s favorite machine is a CM. & he loves flat pitch too 8)

Flat pitch saves the day :!:

Our coal creating new jobs in the Anty region.

Naaaaa you need to meet the two of us sometime. Hell we have both been stirring the pot like that for years. We have a blast doing it. The best is when we are both underground at the same time and these discussions start up
