Oil burners can be messy, but you generally don't have that problem anymore with the newer burners.. But yes, they do get dirty every so many years and you have to clean them..

Didn't someone mention a boiler that was a oil / coal burner combo? I assume those are pretty large in foot print, expensive and probably impossible go get. Does anyone have any good links to one? I'd be interesting in looking at it to say the least.

The oil/coal combo boilers aren't hard to come by at all. The are the same boiler as the the straight coal only boilers they just have a oil gun in addition to the stoker in the firebox. The to common ones are the EFM DF520 and the Keystoker K6. Google both names and you'll see the manufacturers home page.
