 Post subject: Pittston subsidence.

According to todays Tribune, there was a mine subsidence in Pittston.On Tuesday, a 15-by-25-foot void opened in a LaGrange Street basement. A family renting half of the double-block home was forced to leave. Gave this interesting note :In Pittston, 149 subsidences have occurred since 1942, According to a DEP study,,only 10 percent of home and business owners are insured.

Pittston at greater risk of subsidence........


PITTSTON — Decades ago, coal company owners ordered miners to dig into
anthracite veins precariously close to city streets and homes above. It
was a gamble that traded safety for profit.
Now, Joe Stelma says he’s paying for that risk.
Mr. Stelma owns Joe’s Appliance Repair on Mill Street. He bought the
building seven years ago, and estimates he’s since put thousands of
dollars into repairing damage caused by mine subsidence. A recent study
placed his property in the middle of a high-risk mine collapse zone.
