Coal royalties increased in county

SUNBURY — In an attempt to stay competitive with other counties in terms of coal royalties, Northumberland County commissioners agreed Tuesday to increase the royalty on strip and deep-mine coal $1 per ton and salvage coal 50 cents per ton.

Effective April 1, all strip and deep-mine coal royalty will rise from $3 to $4 per ton, while salvage coal royalty will jump from $1.50 to $2 per ton.

Commissioners Frank Sawicki, Vinny Clausi and Kurt Masser unanimously approved the increases on the recommendation of county engineer Charles “Chuckâ€
