ASHLAND — Having a municipal body hold an official public meeting inside a former coal mine made history Wednesday in the borough and county.

Members of Ashland Borough Council rode the rails into the community’s Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, accompanied by municipal officials and the media, to hold their regular meeting.

Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train is one of Pennsylvania’s Top 10 tourist attractions, paying homage to coal miners and their families.

“I’d like to thank Pioneer Tunnel for cooperating with our request,â€
