I was looking through some of my grandfathers old records and I came across the name Payne Coal Company and it said that he worked there from 1929-1933. Another name that came up was Sunday Coal Company which he worked for from 1938-1939. I can not find any information relating to these two companies. I'm not sure if they are companies or names of mines. All the other coal companies that he worked for from 1929-1960 I have found, Can anyone help on the first two?

The Payne Coal Company was up in Taylor, there is still a building or two left of the colliery, it is now a trucking companythere... its up near Keiser Ave. , maybe this will give you a start in your search.

they were most likely small independent mines. some only lasted a few years and there is probably little to no trace to them either on the surface, or on paper.

The " Pyne" was in Taylor. It was in the rear of 286 corporation. Going west on Keyser av. it would have been on the right, before the Keyser Av. interchange of the PA turnpike. Ive also heard of these mines. Ill keep on digging. have you tried the annual reports by the PA dept of mines ? I dont have complete set in my posession, but I know OSM has a complete set. That may be your best bet.

Banksie we miss you already lol. But at least now maybe Ill get the numbers lol. But I talked with Andy. He said the Sunday coal company had a slope in West Pittston, off the " back road" (?). But it was in West Pittston.

Yep, that makes sense.. Westmoreland and the Supey slope were also off the back road. Isn't it actually Slocum Ave? or something? Everyone just calls it the back road though..

Banks, "The Back Road" has a couple different names, its Main St. in Swoyersville, then Shoemaker Ave. in West Wyoming, then Slocum Ave. in West Pittston. I always knew it as the "back road".
