Why is it that the media always portrays Coal mining as a horrid lifestyle and on the fringes of starvation?

Granted, it is hard and dirty work for a paycheck. And working for a paycheck will rarely make one wealthy in any industry. And mining has a vicious Boom/Bust cycle. But it seems that the media focuses on the Bust cycle and says little about the Boom phase.

Growing up in the mid-west our church had contact with a church in Logan County WVA. We were all the time hearing how poor and destitute the people in WVA were.

Or Bootleggin' in the Anthracite Region. The depression was tough on most folks irregardless of the region or lifestyle.

I don't have all the answers.
I don't even know all the questions!

There are alot of very poor people in WV. Remember not everyone in WV works in a coal mine. It is an extreme you either work in the mines or you are on welfare. Thats why people in Washington need to get it through their thick skulls that if they kill mining then they will kill a state.
