It is a great area. The mine sits at the north end of the town called Helper. You locomotive guys know what that means. They need the extra umph to get up over Soldier Summit to drop down into...Spanish or American Forks, one of the two. Then, its a straight shot up valley to SLC.

Neat area with lots of petroglyphs, big game hunting, 4x4ing, etc.

Oh, and there is a little restaurant named Greek Streak that has some really good food.

Utah has some interesting mines. All are UG, but they are working on getting a surface mine over near Bryce Canyon. Some of the mines had ventilation breakouts that I used to inspect. Four hour hike up a canyon wall or go through the mine. Cool stuff.

Found the exact location of the anthracite deposit. Its located within Pilot Knob Mountain. And like the veins in New mexico. The same veins contain both anthracite and bity coal.

Evidently the deposits in Colorado were developed to some extent. A US bureau of mines report for 1919 lists a production of 104,279 tons.

Castle Gate mine photo from "back in the day", interesting that Butch Cassidy held up the train there.
