I found some pictures of the Centralia Mine in WA you might be interested in.

Look to the NE and you see Mt. Rainier...

Look to the SE and you see Mt. St. Helen's.

They work a really rotten mountain. This was a diversion that they couldn't hold. Came up with the idea to run HDPE over the unstable location. That still didn't work.

Sometimes they need some...prodding...to keep a proper road ditch.

Thats a memory jog, I drove past there only a couple of months ago, saw that scar and wondered if there was any coal mines around those parts.
