john, to answer your question, it was quite a bit ago, but not that long ago :wink: its a major colliery slope but unfortunately only goes down about 600 feet to the first gangway which is about 50 feet above the water level. the rest of the 4000 foot slope is flooded. the slope is in the baltimore vein and there is access to 6 veins of coal from this slope above water level. the mine is sealed now. nice photos greg. good contrast between the sulfur, rust, amd, coal and rock.

Wow, I am impressed. I hadn't seen any photos of this mine as I recall how much effort was required just to retain your balance getting into it, nevermind having to carry your expensive camera and lighting equipment. Very nice!

this thing must be older than dirt. hercules powder went out in the early '60's and that style packaging is from the late '20's.

mine closed in the early 1970s. however almost perfectly preserved and extremely dry in most areas except a few haulage tunnels and gangways. the one with all the orange amd sulfer and iron deposits is right above water level and is sometimes flooded with the changing minepool.
