The abandoned longwall machine in those shots were totally awesome. The shields are still there at the face holding the roof up.

That place must be a museum or something...the power is still on. They had to go in the shaft to the working face plus everything is still in the buildings. :?:

One of the captions said it was still in operation with only 80 employees, a far cry from what it was due to the market. It looks run down and mostly unused. But they still mine there. Can you imagine 4 1/2 miles for a tour? That would be sweet. Ya, you can make a day of it just pokng around.

The caption said it was a "tunneling machine" so more like a continious miner then a longwall, looks almost exactly like a british road heading machine.

yeah, they're using a different type of machine but the method is longwall it looks like from the map and the pics.. Those are definatly longwall shields. Longwalling is a type of mining - just here in the states everyone refers to the longwall shear heads (coal cutters) as the longwall.

Pretty wild mining machine though...! Wow.. and if thats the active working section..... it certainly leaves something to be desired!
