Thanks Doug. That's what I thought but I just wasn't sure.

i think what they were refering to in respect to the mantrip was a spark between the track and wheels as they are steel. when i worked for Tennco coal in clairfield we had a diesel mantrip which was permissable and could be ridden to the face and around the return.

The news overnight was not good. The other four were killed in the initial blast, too.

Prays and thoughts go out to all of the friends and families.

The mine maps are posted. For those curious about sealed areas and Bitty ventilation it is a good case study.

The large maps are 6 - 7 Megs, but have all of the details

Scroll down for the map links:

Thanks Doug

I have been wanting to see those. I just do not get where the methane was building in a longwall type mine since there all little to no old workings. So that leaves the methane for the most part at the cutting face. Meaning that the longwall shuts down automatic with the methane monitors. I can't wait to see the report on this one. Should be interesting.

The report will be an interesting read for sure. I've not heard enough details to make any sense of it.

The northern part of the mine was not closely linked to the older workings. And appears to be rather small. In fact the mine is almost two separate mines. With the southern portions nearly out of coal. I guessing within a year the southern portion would have been mined out and maybe sealed completly.
It mostly depends on the need for beltways out the south.

I'm wondering what the status of the other units was at the time? And damage in the older South workings?

OK. The quick and dirty.

This should cover most questions:

http://www.azdot.gov/Highways/Materials/Geotech_Design/Seminar/PDF/MineMap_Interpretation.pdf

I have a single page, but have not gotten it posted.

Coalfire sent me a file, too. but have not gotten it posted.

etc

A quick note on this specfic map.

Green arrow are intake air., solid line is Primary Escapeway.
Blue Arrow are Neutral air
Yellow Line is secondary escapeways
Red Arrows is the exhaust air.
Red line is Beltway.

Some of that info will come out with the report (sometime). The rest would take an insider to get.

The whole thing is turning into a witch hunt with blinding speed.

From the earliest news reports it seems that all of the news outlets have focused on the "hundreds of violations" & " hundreds of thousand of dollars in fines" . None of which have been put into context. Massey has been tried in the court of public media and found guilty.

I have tried to dig though the MSHA reports and I cannot find a pattern that shows excessive problems. Yes the fines we up significantly in 08 and 09, but so was everybodies. MSHA really turned the heat up in the past 2-3 years.

Yesterday I heard a sound bite of the President vowing to take action against "unsafe operators like Massey"
