Above is the mule way for the Pine Brook shaft ( see Pine Brook shaft disaster) before it was flushed in the late 60's. Leading from the surface to the Clark vein
It was through this opening that a rescue attempt was made during the Pine Brook shaft disaster. "Pop" supey did manage to crawl a few hundred feet on his belly through the partially flushed mule way. But unfortunately it was blocked.

Map from ASP 4 flushing project.

From a department of mines report:
March 24,1884
Our connections have been made with old workings of Clark vein, hence with mule-way or man-way. The man-way upon the surface has been extended towards the breaker some distance by building side walls, and covering with large and substantial flag-stones, making a very complete and easy man-way from lower vein to surface.

Very neat photo and manway. I love the brick arches, would have been great to photograph in modern times.

I agree. Reminds me of the PA tunnel construction.
