There has been a song on my mind for the last 20 years that is about the goldrush. Sends shivers up my spine everytime I hear that tune.

Of course you can always watch this one on the 16-to-One mine in California if you prefer. Take the tour, I did.

my old band had a song about mining, specifically about the late 1800's early 1900's immigrant anthracite miners and how they got taken advantage of by the big operators so badly. it was was called "agony and anthracite"

Kathy Matea - Coal; is a great album if you like country and bitty.

Merle Travis wrote "Dark as a Dungeon" in the 50's and it is a country classic that has been done dozens of times. By everyone from Johnny Cash to Gordon Lightfoot. The Lightfoot version is quite different and well done.

How about Cumberland Blues by the Grateful Dead?

"...A lotta poor man make a five dollar bill, Keep him happy all the time.
Some other fella's makin' nothin' at all And you can hear him cry,
"Can I go, buddy, can I go down Take your shift at the mine?"

Gotta get down to the Cumberland Mine.
Gotta get down to the Cumberland Mine.
That's where I mainly spend my time.
Make good money, five dollars a day. Made anymore, I might move away..."
