Four teenage boys who were trapped for hours in a 100-foot-deep abandoned mine shaft in Longswamp Township, Berks County, were rescued by dozens of emergency workers over the weekend, authorities said.
One of the teens fell down the shaft early Saturday and was knocked unconscious when he hit his head, Topton Fire Chief Randy Sicher said. His three companions climbed down to him and became trapped.

Police said the teens - all from Kutztown - were pulled to safety after a seven-hour rescue involving at least 50 emergency workers from the area.

The boys were taken to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia and the head injury, authorities said. Their names were not released. Police say the four teens were part of a larger group camping near Bear Creek Mountain Resort.

The info is probably wrong. If he fell down a "shaft" 100' deep, I think he would be dead and the others could not have got to him. Most likely a slope.

Coopersburg is 17 miles from Bear Creek Mountain Resort and looking on the Topographic map, there is only one mining area in Berks County and it seems to be a stripping pit far away.

There used to be iron mines all around the allentown/bethlem area, they were in operation in the 1800's. i saw a map in a old geology book that showed mines all over the place down there back then. not sure how many of them were underground mines. i thought that all of that would have been paved over by now.
