Is it just me or has the market on these helmets gone crazy? The comfo cap is now going for more than the turtleback or soft caps that I got ten or less years ago. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290109570526&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1 is just one example of the insanity. As of this writing it is up to 172.50.

I think thats becasue it's a low vein. low veins seem to go for a lot more..... don't know why.

In that case what is the difference between the "Low vein" and the standard caps?

about an inch and a half clearance on top. alot of miners in the northern anthracite field had low vein caps, acutally pretty much all of them did, unless it was a different style cap. or bit miners used them cause usually their seams are around 4 to 5 feet.

It is kind of ashame that people are buying the old MSA ComfoCaps up to use them in mines. I'm sure the old ones are not as safe as the new ones, who knows what kind of abuse they have gotten, and lastly once they are all used up, they are gone. If you think about it, they did redesign the ComfoCap for a reason...

That's rather surprising especially considering many of the classic comfo caps fetch a higher dollar than the new ones. Last I checked, the new ones went for about $39 and I have seen the classics go above $100.

yes but there are not new low vein comfo caps. what i dont understand is how they put new liners in the old comfo caps. surely they arent using the old rope and leather strap inside???

I guess the other confusion is that there is no such thing as a "low vein" ComfoCap. There are only new ones, old ones, and very old ones. Unfortunately the old ones which some how survived through the years are being wrecked.

I don't know that the older ComfoCaps could be modified to use the newer suspension. I would imagine that the people using them are using them as is or repairing the damaged leather. Since they are probably not safe by todays standards, I'm sure the mining companies are not modifying them..

yea, even on the msha label inside it says the helmet has to be replaced after an "impact" now how severe that is i dont know, or what they consider and "impact". but im sure the older ones are definitely safe by todays standards.

They also warn you not to paint your comfocap or to avoid cleaning it with harse chemicals. I would assume they were or the law was concerned that any type of chemical used on the hat would cause it to lose strength. And why a single impact against the hat would be enough for them to recommend throwing it out. I guess it is something to think about especially when dealing with old used caps..
