Ok Guys, I gave a bag of the Anthracite I brought home to a friend to try in his wood stove. He could not get it to light. In a wood fire nor with a torch.

What gives?

you need a good updraft. it will never light with a torch. gotta get a wood fire up to around 850 degrees and the key is a good updraft from below it through the bed of coal. when you stop out the 9 this winter we'll show ya how to start it up. unless the stove is meant for coal its gonna be real hard if not impossible to keep a fire going. unless youre mike a.

This is depressing.

The Blacksmith didn't like his bag either. He wanted a bag of Pocohontas.

The folks out here are not used to it at all.

For Anthracite to burn properly all the combustion air has to come from under the fire. If the woodstove has grates and a damper that will let air in under the fire it will burn Anthracite. The best thing is to get a good wood fire going and let it mostly burn down to coals. Than throw a little coal on. Wait a couple than throw some more on. In no time you'll have a fire.

Obviously this discussion will have to continue in person, we've digressed to inside jokes.

Mike, I think you agreed in regional food for dinner sometime.

I can't make out what the sign says. Where do you get anthracite these days? Do you take it out of the mine that you give tours in?

"No Touching, poking, proding, fondeling, stoking, lighting, ashing, shaking etc, etc. without Maike A's explicit.OK! sincerly, Mike A."

Nah none of the tour anthracite mines are also active anymore because of the liability. There are a few active deep mines in the area as well as quite a few strip mines who will sell the coal to breakers and distributors where one can purchase it. they also ship it today as well.
