How long are bootleg mines usually operating? I know it will vary greatly based on individual operations circumstances. Let's take the mine Chris works at (Alfred Brown right?) for instance. How long has that hole been going and how long do y'all expect it to keep going?

OK. I thought a bootleg mine was an illegal mine.

Chris is semi retired from anthracite mining since 2011. I've been down to work here and there it not like I used to. Got an aircraft modification and repair shop to run an my airplane to build. Something's gotta give. Brownies slope was sunk in the early 2000's and there's enoug coal there at the rate they are mining to last for quite a long time. Banks is actively mining coal and one of the mines he worked at has been at it for over 30 years.

And I would never bootleg coal 8)

Any reason why you referred to yourself in the third person? Also, what does it mean to have "bored cylinders" in a plane?

I know what you mean Chris, a man can have too many hobbies. Some of us, myself included, are lucky enough to have our "hobbies" make us a living.

It also didnt help that the mine was an hour and a half from my house.

Dave, a bored cylinder in airplane world is more known as an oversize cylinder. As the cylinders wear they eventually need to be replaced or overhauled. When overhauled they are typically oversized by .005 or .010 of an inch. This removed the wear marks. They are marked with a blue stripe at the base of the cylinder denoting them as oversize. Obviously they then need new matching pistons.

That's the first mention of Brownie in a long time. Nice to hear he's still moving coal.

Glad to hear a small mine is still doing good. What is the market for that coal? Home heating?

Don't know, tri axle comes and picks up a load twice a day and takes it to the breaker. Where it goes from there is whoever buys it. The breaker buys it as raw mine run coal.

Thats interesting. So they are able to compete with bigger companies. When I was running a logging outfit I couldn't compete with the big companies hauling in thousands of tons of pulpwood a day. I made my money on high quality hardwoods. Pulpwood didn't pay enough for a small timer to fool with because the big guys hauling major tonnage kept the price down.

That is always how it is. Big guys keep prices down so low that the little guys can't compete. To stay competitive, most owner-operators are taking loads at such low prices, that they are barely breaking even.
