HA! now theres one question im really surprised no one has asked yet! we get this asked alot on tours. well if they had to go number one..... they went where ever they were standing at the time. if they had to go number 2, they went in a cross cut between chambers, or in a monkey between chutes. sometimes they just went in the chamber where they were. remember, they got paid to put coal to the breaker, so any time wasted doing anything else was money lost. so they wouldnt travel too far at all to go the bathroom. as for the mules, the mule boys would have to clean up after them. if they went in the stable, they cleaned it up. if they went on a gangway or tunnel pulling a mine car, they just left it there!

haha, I get asked this all the time. I guess yuppy's are grossed out by the fact that we squat down in the return and go to the bathroom. And you know you never seem to have the required paper when you need it! I usually carry a roll of toilet paper in my backpack along with my lunch but sometimes all you have is a greasy rag :-D

I guess the good think about going to the bathroom during the mule days, you can just go right in the middle of a gangway. It wouldn't look too much different except for the lack of hay.
