yesterday there was a great subsidence in scranton. we went today and checked it out. after making friends with the landowner, whos backyard its in, we went to the hole. walking up to it, it didnt look like much. like a 3-4 foot hole. well as we got closer and went over the fence we noticed it was about 30 feet deep and was like a bell, got huge inside. like 30-40 feet across. there is workings and maybe a tunnel to the north and workings to the south. talked to the lady who owns it, who is pretty cool, and we might go descend it. looks awesome. maybe tomorow night, we'll see.

Very cool. It makes you wonder how long the opening to this void has been inaccessible. Who knows what you could find. But being that it is a subsidence, be weary of other loose rock once inside.

mmmmm...Chris if you descend into it be careful dude. Never asked you but have you descended any shafts before. It's something that big bad bond here would like to try but I haven't yet. Looking to lose a little weight first.

That's real cool that the land owner was willing to talk to you and to let you get close to check it out. Over here (NJ) we have to be all stealth in checking out stuff like that, pretty stupid if you ask me. Coming to think about that I wonder if Mike or Greg have ever spoken to an land owner in Jersey after a shaft cave in or whatever. Guys let me know thanks

I recorded the WYOU broadcast on this. Apparently it just opened up in the corner of this ladies yard. According to OSM, it was 17 - 18 feet deep and an opening of 4 x 6. OSM said they saw pillars in there which would indicate to them that it wasn't robbed. Although the ceiling is obviously not the strongest since it caved on it's own. It looks interesting, although I am not sure how high the ceiling is inside.

Apparently there was a subsidence many years ago of the neighbors house. The entire house feel through according to the neighbor. Another old time resident who lived there when the mine was in operation said he would hear the miners working inside the mine from above.

OSM needs to investigate the mine further to determine if it really is a subsidence and when it is determined it is, they will look to get emergency funding to close it. They will be fencing the area off soon as well.

VERY cool series of pictures!!! It's too bad they're filling it in so soon. I'm sure mine sunsidences aren't cool if it screws up your property, but DAMN, they're interesting! I'm sure they could hear the miners working as close as it is to the surface.

dude if that was my back yard, id stabilize the walls with concrete, build a small headframe and elevator and we would have our own mine!

Absolutely.. That would be the best! I'd build a shead, hoist house, or something over the top of it so noone will see it and keep the mine to myself!

What happened to the Dodge or Mt Pleasent Collieries? Anything left over there to enter the mine?
