Does anyone know of a mine off of Amity Rd. in Byram?

I was out on my Harley today cruising around and as I was coming down Amity Rd, I noticed what looked like a tailing pile in the brush on the side of the road. I turned around and stopped to have a better look. Sure enough there is a pretty good size pile of rocks right next to the road. further into the woods there is a very large cut onto the hill. You can even see it with Google Earth if you put the pointer around 40*58'08.71N 74*41'49.97W. I couldn't leave my bike on the side of the road, and the area is heavily posted so I didn't walk in. Sure looks like a mine though.

If you find Roseville Rd. on a map. Look for the intersection with Roseville, Amity, and Buckhorn roads. If you turn up Amity the tailings are less than 100 yards up on the left. The cut is behind them a ways but you can see it from the road.

Has anyone ever heard of any mines at this location?

Yup, that would be the Roseville Mine. It was actuallly reopened sometime in the 20th century. There is a concrete lined shaft there.

Yes Dan, I received your pictures, congrats to Percy on becoming mine foreman!
