Once again it is time to provide some visual insight into yet another piece of our hard rock mining history. A brief 19th century operation such as this would be largely forgotten... but not by an Iron Miner. ;) Enjoy the slideshow.

Isn't Otisville incredible? It should be renamed Aditville!

Nice work, the water level is allot lower in that upper adit then when we found it. Too bad the collapse is there, because the workings are probably just a little past that.

Yea, judging by the amount of tailings, it does really dig into your curiosity what and how much was actually done past the fill. As the lower and upper levels do not connect, I question the consistency and quality of the ore body.

Yeah, I believe the shaft was filled in from the top.. And thus why you cannot go any further in the upper adit. It was certainly a bit disappointing, as the upper adit is probably the more worked portion of the mine. Since it was documented that was no ore production from this mine, perhaps the ore body was either just too small or the quality was poor.

Dan, I'll agree with the water level. You can see evidence in this tunnel that the water level fills up pretty high, probably during the rainy season. Even though we hit a nasty thunderstorm that afternoon (we hid in the lower adit for cover), you can tell the water level was a lot lower than it had been at other times.

Water level makes it difficult sometimes to document these mines. You never know what to expect!
