We just got back from an excellent trip on Saturday. We teamed up with Underground Miners to explore some Limestone / Natural Cement mines up in New York. Got a ton of excellent shots and got to explore a few huge mines.

The thing about these mines is that they keep going and going and going. High ceilings, humongous pillars, airways to other sections of the mines, multitudes of shafts, rail haulage, underground buildings, remains of old bridges, many winzes, this was an amazing trip. If it weren't for flooding, there would be that much more mine to explore.

I put together a few teaser shots of our upcoming slide show. I hope you enjoy!

These mines were truly impressive on a grand scale! It was really interesting to see the culmination of 19th and 20th century technology in one area. More glimpses of these mines can be found here:

these mines are truly imense and there are plenty of them to explore, they also ilustrate a great cross section of mining technologies from about 1820 to 1960! and vary in pitch from vertical to horizontal and everything in between. i thought that breaking up into 2 teams was a good way to explore these, a recon team and a photo team seems to work well, so a larger group for the next trip would be great! rappeling gear would also save alot of time in getting into the vertical ones, especially for quick recons, and will let us access some of the more unexplored stopes. we even found the need to build a ladder next time to get up in an old drift that was originally accessed with a suspended bridge! i think we should plan another trip for sun. oct 26 which is the day after the CT halloween party.

I'm sure with the right gear, there probably is so much more to explore. These large vertical stopes probably all go down pretty deep. While today only accessible with rope, there probably is much more to see in the other veins. I'd imagine they probably go under water though.

But like you said CT Mike, it is interesting to see the different mining techniques in the different mines. There are clear differences in the styles and the layouts of the mines. We really need to go back as these mines are just so huge there just wasn't enough time to do a thorough investigation.
